Head’s up! Lynn Saville’s entrancing solo show “Dark City: Urban America at Night” is on view at the Griffin Museum of Photography’s satellite gallery at the Stoneham Theatre in Stoneham, MA through April 9th but if you can make it, there will be an Artist Reception there TONIGHT, Tuesday, March 21st, 2017 from 6:30pm – 8:30pm (see details below). Here’s why I want to go.
In her eerie and iridescent photographs, Saville gathers time into long-exposure images of American cities in the hours just before dawn and after sunset, hours when our consciousness, too, often seems altered. Saville capitalizes on the visual and emotional ambivalence of “the boundary times between night and day” to suggest contrasts between the seen and unseen, the known and unknowable. Her luminous images suspend time and strip cityscapes of their familiar architectural features and inhabitants. In her prolonged gaze, shadowy depths and glowing lights transform mundane urban spaces into places of mystery and enchantment.
Shooting mostly places and spaces under renovation using available light, color film and a large format camera, Saville’s images resonate with warmth and vibrancy, conferring a paradoxically sentimental cast to the empty streets, construction sites and structures. Tight compositional tension magnifies the acute absence of people, suspending viewers in a surreal state of night and day, vacancy and renewal. From sparkling panoramas to intimate interior spaces shimmering with reflected light from the street, Saville’s images whisper and romance the viewer.
A free, public reception with the artist will be held at the Griffin Museum’s atelier gallery at the Stoneham Theatre TONIGHT, Tuesday, March 21st, 2017 from 6:30 – 8:30pm. For directions and more information, go to: http://griffinmuseum.org/show/lynn-saville-dark-city/
