Ready for some serious fun? This year’s Somerville Toy Camera Festival (STCF) is in full swing, featuring eighty-six photographs made with an inventive spectrum of toy cameras and film, selected by 2017 juror Michael Kirchoff. Exhibits at Nave Gallery, Nave Annex and Washington Street Gallery, along with various festival events, continue through the month of September. That means you have just two more weeks to venture out and take it in. I got to all three galleries this past weekend and was delighted to find the STCF 5th Anniversary show filled with inspired and inspiring photography!
I cannot begin to describe the originality, beauty and emotion in the photographs I saw. So here is a teaser to whet your appetites with some of my favorites, grouped by each of the three exhibiting galleries. Where available, I have furnished information on the camera and film utilized, which will give you some idea of the range of creative combinations these photographers have adopted. As with all unique imagery, seeing these photographs on a computer or handheld device is criminally diminishing. It’s akin to reading a fabulous restaurant menu online. For a fully satisfying sensory fill, I hope you will just indulge yourselves and get out there.
EXHIBITED AT WASHINGTON STREET GALLERY
There is another exciting aspect to the STCF that you should know about: almost all of the eighty-six remarkable photographs are for sale, and at a shadow of the prices you’d find at established galleries. The greatly reduced pricing makes it possible to purchase photographs from seasoned professionals and amateurs alike for your own home. I admit I am not above temptation and usually end up making one of these special photographs my own. The big problem is choosing.
EXHIBITED AT NAVE GALLERY
For those of you unable to get to Somerville, I hope you find my small slice of juror Michael Kirchoff’s stellar selection enticing. And good news! To mark its 5th Anniversary, the STCF is creating an exhibition catalog.
